More Moving TopTips
We have written a packing guide to further assist you when moving home. You'll notice that the guide is split to each room of your house. Happy packing !
KITCHEN:
* When wrapping pots and pans, use the space inside the pan for other small items that you are wrapping, for example salt and pepper shakers. This saves lots of space in your boxes.
* If you have knives in a knife block don't try to wrap separately just wrap the block and knives together in bubble wrap.
* Wrap glasses separately in tissue paper or bubble wrap. Wrap the stems of the glasses until they are the same width as the base and the bulb. Place in the box upright to save damage in transit.
* Pack plates vertically instead of stacking flat on top of each other. They have a far greater weight bearing strength this way.
* Individually wrap dishes. Stack them in your moving boxes flat as you would in your cabinets. Put bubble wrap between each dish.
BEDROOMS:
* Pack quilts, pillows, light bulky items in tea chest boxes. Rememeber you can pack small more delicate items in between the pillows for extra protection - just remember that they are there when you unpack !
*Use mattress covers to protect your mattress. Move the mattress downstairs before putting the plastic cover on as you may tear it in the process of moving it
* Buy some cardboard wardrobes to transport dresses, coats or suits that normally live on a hangers. Simply lift the items straight into the cardboard wardrobe to avoid creasing.
* Use only medium size boxes for books -- they get very heavy quickly. Pack books flat inside the box and alternate bindings to prevent spine damage.
* Put jewellery, important documents etc into small strong boxes to keep with you during the move.
LOUNGE:
* Plants need to be boxed to avoid damage to foliage
* Pack lampshades separately to the bases and wrap in bubble wrap or tissue paper. Don't wrap lampshades in newspaper as the ink will smudge !
* Put a masking tape X across mirrors and paintings framed with glass. Wrap each picture or mirror in bubble wrap. Small mirrors can be packed into boxes. Mark the outside with "GLASS INSIDE".
* Use double walled moving cardboard size boxes for CD'S and DVD'S as these boxes will get very heavy quickly
DINING ROOM
* Wrap chair legs and arms to protect and prevent scratches. Bubdle armless chairs in pairs to save space.
* For large tables remove the legs where possible and wrap seperately. Remember to put nuts and bolts into small bags for safe keeping and tape to the underside of table. Wrap table top in bubblewrap or blankets.
* Wrap all pieces of china and glassware individually using acid free tissue. Place in box and mark top "Fragile this way up".
* Wrap silver peices in acid free tissue to stop tarnishing
GARAGE /SHED
* Drain fuel and oil from lawnmovers before loading
* Wrap bike pedals and chains in carrugated card to avoid other items from damage or staining
* Make sure the garden hose is drained of water ! Many a removal man has been covered with water left in the pipe.
Remember that if you are well organised and have plenty of the right size Packing, Moving Boxes, Bubble Wrap and Tape, your move should go smoothly !
